Take Care of the Elderly

It is time for the ‘me’ generation to give back to those who have made it possible for us to lead healthy and happy lives. Baby boomers are now starting to turn 60. The first group turned 60 last year. In a few years we Baby Boomers will be the senior citizens. We need to set the example now and take care of the elderly and their problems.

We as human beings can help elderly people by the way we treat them. Elderly people are naturally slow and can be a little addled. If we are behind an elderly person in line at the grocery store and have to wait a few extra minutes because the old lady is fumbling with her money, we can show our compassion by smiling and acting as though we don’t have a care in the world. The older lady may even apologize for slowness. We can help by saying ‘no problem, I don’t have anything but time or I’m not in any hurry. Remember; that old lady will be us one day.

If we have elderly neighbors, especially ones who live alone, we should invite them over for meals or take meals to them. On holidays if we know they are alone, we can adopt them and treat them like family. No one should be alone all the time. A short visit every now and then won’t take much of your time and it will mean the world to the elderly person.

If an elderly neighbor is sick, you could offer to take them to the doctor or take some nourishing soup. A little company always makes elderly people feel so much better. You might even take her some flowers from your garden.

You can teach your children to take care of the elderly also by encouraging them to visit an elderly neighbor with you. Training them to be kind to others is one of the most important lessons they will ever learn. Maybe the kindness you teach them will spill over to the time when they have to take care of you as you age.

A civilization is judged by how it treats its elderly. As civilized people it is our duty to take care of our precious elderly population. They have given us so much and ask for so little in return. All they want is to be treated with love and respect befitting their age. That’s certainly not too much to ask. Is it?
